Sophie Pederson

Sophie Pederson is a sculptor and painter studying Studio Art at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.

In 2025, her artwork was selected as a Special Merit winner in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's School Art Program, one of the largest and most competitive student art competitions in the country. That recognition earned her a place among the 48 students chosen to attend the Western Art Academy at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas.

The Western Art Academy is a rigorous, four-week immersion in classical painting and sculpture. Students receive one-on-one instruction from professional Western artists, studying oil painting for two weeks and oil-based clay sculpture for two weeks. The program is fully funded by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and awards college credit through Schreiner University.

Sophie had never sculpted before arriving in Kerrville. Over two weeks of intensive work, she created a figurative bust of a Native American woman in ceremonial dress, complete with an elaborate feathered headdress. The piece, titled In Her Finery, caught the attention of collectors at the Academy's end-of-session exhibition and was selected to be cast in bronze as a limited edition.

She is now developing The Adornment Series, an ongoing collection of bronze portrait busts honoring the diversity and heritage of Native American peoples across tribes and traditions.

From Clay to Bronze

01

Original Sculpture

Each piece begins as a hand-sculpted original in oil-based clay, shaped over weeks of focused studio work under the guidance of professional sculptors.

02

Mold Making

A detailed mold is created from the finished clay original, capturing every surface detail of the sculpture for faithful reproduction.

03

Bronze Casting

Each edition is individually cast in bronze using traditional foundry methods. The process produces a unique piece every time, with hand-finished patina and detail work.

04

Limited Edition

Every sculpture is numbered and signed. Once the edition is complete, the mold is retired. No additional copies will ever be made.

In Her Finery

A bust of a Native American woman in full ceremonial regalia, her headdress rendered in exacting detail. The piece honors both the artistry of Indigenous adornment and the quiet strength of the women who wore it.

The Adornment Series

In Her Finery is the first piece in The Adornment Series, an ongoing collection of bronze portrait busts celebrating the rich diversity of Native American peoples. Each sculpture focuses on a different tribe or tradition, rendered with the same commitment to detail and dignity.

New sculptures will be created as original clay works, then cast in bronze as limited editions. Each piece stands on its own, but together the collection tells a broader story of heritage, strength, and beauty across Indigenous cultures.
